I was honored to be part of the official festival photography team for the 6th installment of the Art of Cool Festival in Durham, North Carolina. The festival hosts alcohol and food vendors alongside jazz, funk, hip hop, and r&b music artists in various music venues around downtown Durham. I use the term venue loosely as the festival transformed the Durham Bulls Athletic Park into the main stage for the headlining acts, complete with a VIP lounge and backstage media area. The setup was so unique, Governor Roy Cooper even stopped by to check it out for himself while honoring the festival creators. I think the amazing thing with festivals that use pre-existing venues rather than bringing stages to huge areas (i.e. fairgrounds, amphitheaters, etc.) is that the atmosphere can be tailored to music artists slated to play in them. For example, after Jill Scott performed at the DBAP, 9th Wonder put on a DJ set at the Durham Armory as part of the after party. How perfect is that?!
So much energy and diversity in music in such a short time. I was only able to catch day 1, so see some of the amazing artists I was able to capture.
Headliners Jill Scott and Ari Lennox, along with Black Violin, Marcus Anderson, and Yalonda Raburn.
